29 Palms Welcomes Dan & Janis

Bagley Days 1997

When Frank and Helen Bagley arrived with their three sons on Thanksgiving Day, 1927, 29 Palms was little more than an oasis beckoning in the sun. They had filed on a 160-acre homestead, setting up house in an 18-by-18 foot garage-like structure. Outside they installed a gas pump to always be ready for trips "down below" for supplies.

True visionaries, the Bagleys opened a general store when neighbors began regularly asking them to lend out or pick up supplies. The plaza, which grew up around Bagley's Market, soon became the center of 29 Palms. In addition to food and sundries, people came for their mail, notary service, library books, and perhaps most important of all, to socialize.

Much of what this community is today is because of this hardworking, dedicated pioneer couple, whose story can be found in Helen Bagley's book, "Sand in My Shoes"

A talented writer, she chronicled the adventures of early desert homesteaders; summing up the essence of 29 Palms in a single sentence--"My first impression of my new home was of the kindness of my neighbors and not of loneliness."

Helen an Frank's legacy continues to this day. Their grandson, Jim, continues to reside here and follow in his grandparents' footsteps.
